Within Webro’s modern warehouse and
office facility one of the busiest departments is the
winding room. Within it’s walls are 5 winding lines catering
for the different types of cables that need to be wound to
both standard and customer specific lengths.
Why have a winding department?
Webro stock and sell hundreds of
different cables and although many are bought on pre wound
lengths and stocked on customer friendly reels ready for
immediate use. Many of the lines are brought in on bulk
reels in order to be able to respond to customer specific
lengths. This helps the customer with managing their costs
and their waste, which in this age of recycling and waste
management is critical to all concerned.
The different machines are used depending
upon what type of cable
Warehouse manager Wayne Saunders explains
the reasoning behind the different winding machines. “It all
depends upon the size of cable and also what type of cable
it is” explains Wayne, “basically the larger the cable the
bigger the machine that is required to re-wind it”.
“We have a total of five lines for
rewinding, two of which are high-speed semi automatic lines
that we use for rewinding bulk reels of the WF digital ready
range of cables”. “Then we have one machine that is suited
to fibre optic cables, which as you can imagine due to the
glass cores, have to be handled carefully. The last two
machines are basically hand-winding machines for smaller
types of cable with an OD of 7mm or less. All in all we can
accommodate pretty much any none standard customer length.
We aim to rewind as fast as we can and accommodate all
customer requests. Occasionally though, due to the nature of
the department and especially on a quick turn around, we are
unable to meet customer requirements, but most of the time
we are able to move jobs around and help to keep our
customers satisfied”.
