Time to Take Control

‘Control cables’ is a general term used for a group of cables, namely YY, SY and CY cables. Each cable is similar in design and is used for a multitude of applications. They’re flexible, easy to route and install, and they’re used arguably for the widest set of applications in the industry. Most often they’re seen in manufacturing plants, automated processing facilities, equipment regulation, production and assembly lines, computer units, and conveyors, but they’re used far and wide across a diverse array of applications.

The first cable in the line-up - YY cable, is also known as YSLY, and is simply an unscreened PVC insulated and PVC sheathed cable. It comes with a grey sheath with either black insulated cores with white numbers printed on it, or colour coded cores, and can be supplied with or without a green/yellow earth core. The cable’s designed to ensure flexibility and is competitively priced. It’s not suitable for applications that require torsional twisting or where there is risk of contamination by oils or harsh chemicals; a cable with a polyurethane (PUR) jacket is better suited in these scenarios.

The CY cable is similar in design to the YY cable, but with added electromagnetic protection in the form of a tinned copper wire braid screen. It’s also referred to as YSLCY. This protection allows the cable to be located near other electronic equipment as it doesn’t interfere with its signals, and vice versa. Again, it uses PVC materials for both the insulation and sheath are usually grey in colour. This cable can have a number of coded or colour coded cores, and is available with or without a green/yellow earth core. Like YY cables they’re not suitable for use where the cable is under torsional stress, or in environments in which they’ll be in contact with oils and chemicals. A special PUR sheathed cable will provide longevity in this application.

Finally, there’s the SY cable or YSLYSY, which is far more robust than the first two cables outlined above. SY cables have good mechanical strength properties because they contain a galvanised steel wire braid, and they can be installed where there is risk of cuts and abrasion. Made using PVC materials, they have a strong bedding of PVC with a galvanised steel wire braid (GSWB) underneath a clear PVC sheath. They are sometimes referred to as armoured flexible control cables or armoured flex.

YY, CY and SY cables are available from stock from 2core to 100core and 0.75mm² to 120mm², and can be cut to length. They’re all are CPR classified with Declaration of Performance (DoP) documents available for each upon request.

If you require any of these cables to be Low Smoke Non-Halogen (LSNH) for use in public buildings, or you need cables that meet BS6701, please get in touch so that we can help you to make the right choice for your project.

Similarly, if you require something with smaller conductors like LiYY or LiYCY, with European colour codes to DIN 47100, or even paired versions LiYY-TP or LiYCY-TP, these are all available on short lead times.
